YouthWOKE Presentation at Harvard’s SponsrUs 2017
The YouthWOKE Student Forum was held on June 9, 2017 at Fisher College. Students from across BPS spent a Friday evening with student-led workshops, projects, entertainment, and a keynote speaker. Key topics included: Colorism and POC History, LGBTQ and Women Issues, Privilege & How to React, and the School to Prison Pipeline. Keynote speaker, Roxanne Longoria spoke about pride and diversity.

Program Goal
Foster a safe space for students to share and learn about racial issues affecting them while learning together and becoming empowered to create positive change in their own lives and others.
What’s in it for students?
- Address race relations that have been personally affecting students and youth and be empowered to create a difference in the community
- Become a passionate leader by developing life, leadership, and job readiness skills
- Looks excellent on a college application/resume
- Get community service hours
Objectives
- Address students’ personal experiences in BPS, communities, and beyond
- Form a connected community between all Boston high school students through communication
- Share ideas to create positive solutions
- Educate each other on different types of racism
- Develop skill sets to best react to prejudice and racism
- Learn youth development skills that are important for the future
- Promote leadership and advocacy for youth
WHO: Boston Public School (BPS) high school students interested in addressing racial climate issues
WHAT: A safe space to discuss race relations in BPS schools and the community while learning lifelong skills
WHEN: Friday 3:30 – 5:30pm
WHERE: BPS Headquarters’ community center at the Bolling Building (Dudley Square in Roxbury)
WHY: Provide a student voice on racial climate in the schools and communities to create positive change
