Beat the Street was a program concept developed, planned and executed by students at the Boston Preparatory Charter School in Hyde Park bringing together students representing 18 Boston high schools. This resource fair provided at risk Boston high school students alternative programs to hanging out in the street. Co-sponsors included the Mayor’s Boston Youth Zone, Northeastern University, the Boston Police Department, Rebecca’s Cafe and JP Licks Ice Cream. Music and emceeing was provided by D.J. Maverik of JAMN 94.5. Presenting organizations included Girls LEAP, Project Hip Hop, the Mayor’s Youthline, Boston Navigator, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department for Youth, Samarateen, Teen Empowerment, Future Chefs, Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, Community Music Center Boston, Youth Leadership Council and more and there was an engaging panel discussion with questions and answers with the students.
